The oil companies are pumping hundreds of millions of gallon of toxic chemical soup into the ground all over the United states. The process is called hydraulic fracturing. Under other circumstances, hydraulic fracturing is last ditch effort to get a little more out of a dying gas well. Where it's presently being used, it's designed to release natural gas, which otherwise would not be available because it is locked in the underground rocks.

Unfortunately, natural gas in not the only thing this process releases. When the process breaks up the rocks deep under the surface, it also releases the trapped gases and other toxic chemicals into the area's ground water. Residents in areas where this process has been used have found methane, ethane, propane, coming out of the water faucets in their homes. Laboratory testing of these waters have also shown heavy metal contamination -- chemicals including barium, cadmium. strontium, aluminum and mercury.

The hundreds of millions of gallons of water pumped into the ground for this process has 596 different chemicals in it. About half of this water is never removed. It stays in the ground. It doesn't take Einstein or Sherlock Holmes to figure out that pumping hundreds of millions of gallons of highly toxic chemicals in hundreds of thousands of locations in thirty four states is asking for disaster of unimaginable proportions.

Once the ground water is contaminated, it's impossible to get the toxins back out. In contaminated areas, the toxic chemicals will continue to slowly leak out into the groundwater for thousands of years. This incredibly-serious, disastrous, and inevitable result of the hydraulic fracturing process is being completely ignored and being given all but zero publicity.

In numerous area where the hydraulic fracturing process has been employed, serious water contamination has shown up. People who had been healthy are becoming sick. Some have died. Here's and example of the absurdity of the gas company executives' denials. In some of the contaminate areas, residents can turn on the water in their kitchen sink, hold a match over the sink and the gas coming that came out of the water faucet will burn in an explosive-like burst of flames.

In spite of the fact that in dozens of locations, contaminants were not there before the drilling, but are present after the drilling, the gas company executives claim that there is no direct evidence that hydraulic fracturing contaminates the water. In other words, there's no official study proving the connection between hydraulic fracturing and groundwater pollution. Again, it doesn't take Einstein or Sherlock Holmes to figure out that the money interests are intentionally deceiving the public.

How can they deny the cause and effect relationship in the face of overwhelming evidence? Because in spite the fact that in the past ten years hundreds of thousands of gas well have been drilled, not even one, single, official study has been done to investigate the possible side effects of hydraulic fracturing. So, in spite of being ethically and morally bankrupt, they are technically correct.

What about the federal governments Environmental Protection Agency? The gas companies lobbied congress hard enough and with enough money that hydraulic fracturing is exempt from scrutiny by The National Environmental Protection Agency.

The Enron Connection: You might note that deregulation is intimately connected to the Enron scandal and to the collusion-style ties between the Enron leaders and the Bush junior presidency.

1) Enron's leader, Ken Lay and George Bush junior had had a very strong personal connection.

2) Enron was the largest single corporate donor to the 2000, financial campaign of George Bush Jr.

3) Enron was intimately connected to the natural gas industry. Enron was not interested in natural gas. Their only interest was in making money. Enron became a quasi-stock market for natural gas. They transformed energy (in this case natural gas) into an instrument that could be traded like stocks and bonds. In 1992, Enron became the biggest buyer and seller of natural gas in America. Enron remained a major player in the money end of the natural gas industry until its collapse in ______ .

The Future of Hydraulic Fracturing: Plans are in the works to use this process and drill about 50,000 wells in the watershed area that provides water for New York City. Even if only a fraction of those wells are actually drilled, the irreversible polluting of New York's ground water will adversely affect about sixteen millions of people. In spite of all the in-your-face evidence and in spite of the fact that the damage they are causing is completely irreversible, the gas companies have only one concern: PROFITS AT ANY PRICE!
